22 March

Hey there guys. What’s up? Well, currently, I’m in the middle of finishing one school project of mine but I decided to take a break for a while to write this post. I’ve been thinking of a lot of things lately and this particular topic suddenly came to my mind — reasons why people don’t make money online. Sometimes, it’s good to focus on the negative side of things (like this post) to emphasize a point and of course, to learn from one’s mistakes.

No moneyLet’s face it — we all (or at least most of us) want to make money online. Some of us are already making a good sum of money monthly, but I reckon that there’s still quite a big number of us who don’t make a single dollar on the net. Of course, there are reasons for this!

There are probably quite a number of posts out there which talk about why people don’t earn online, but hey, I have my own list of reasons why a person doesn’t make money online too! Do you think the reason why you’re not making money online is listed here? Well, read on to find out!

1. You’re lazy. No one would make even a single cent if he’s lazy, ya know. If you think that setting up a blog, stuffing some ads on it and leaving it alone would make you any money, then you’re definitely wrong my friend. Success will only come if you exert effort and concentrate on your tasks.

2. You’re doing the wrong thing. You may be very hardworking, but if you’re doing the wrong thing, then you won’t make any money! If you create a site for kids and place ad spots that are for sale (meaning they’re not CPC/CPM ads), then don’t expect any revenue. Kids don’t have credit cards or PayPal accounts!

3. You limit yourself to one source of income. This is probably one of the most common reasons why people don’t make any money online. They either stick to AdSense and hope for a lot of clicks, or try to sell one product that’s not really attractive. Why not try to mix and match stuff? Do a little bit of affiliate marketing, put some CPC ads on your site, and at the same time, sell your ad spaces on an internet marketplace. :)

4. You believe those free e-books saying you can make $1,000 in an hour. While making thousands of dollars in an hour is not impossible, the methods presented by those e-books don’t usually work. The e-books are just full of crap, and you can’t really expect to make tons of money in an hour especially if you’re still new to the internet marketing world! Just remember this: “If it’s too good to be true, it probably is.” and you won’t be wasting any more time in subscribing to those worthless newsletters/reading those e-books.

5. You expect to earn big money without spending a dime. Now, I’m not saying that you can’t make money with free blogs or the like, but do you think you can make $1,000 (or more) a month without having promotion expenses? Sure, you can tell your friends about your site and it can actually get featured in social bookmarking sites if the content is great, but you can’t go so far without really spending.

Still not convinced? Okay, let’s say you’re that good in writing articles and in promoting your stuff. Well, you still have to spend for your website’s development to attract more visitors! You need unique features and a probably great design to really stand out and make big money. Don’t tell me you’d settle for a very plain site which has a white background and uses Times New Roman as the font.

And if it wasn’t obvious yet, Time = Money, so if you say you just used up your time and didn’t spend a cent, you still invested TIME, which can be considered as MONEY. Hope that’s clear!

6. You lack focus. One day you’re so energetic and you’re promoting your new site. The next day you’re being so lazy to update your website and you think of quitting. If you’re like that, then don’t expect to make money. You should focus on your task and your goal if you really want to succeed in your endeavors.

7. You’re not open to new ideas. This is a big hindrance to success. If you just stick to what you know and what you want, then you’d probably be left behind with $0 in your pocket. Try out new techniques, experiment, and learn! Always consider new ideas. There’s nothing to lose anyway…

Now, think deeply. Are you not making money online because of one of the reasons stated above? Well, I guess it’s time for you to focus, be more creative, and be open-minded. I guess that’s it for now guys. Gotta go. See ya later!

I think reason #1 is the reason of many of us! Get working guys, break a leg!

I agree with Yuhu. The most difficult part of making money online is discipline because the boss is yourself…

Yep yep. That’s why it’s #1. People are too lazy to work yet they dream of making big $$$.

Nice quote, Juggler. That should be in the heart of every internet marketer! Will keep them working and productive, nuff said. :)

I agree with all of your seven reasons, but I will also add that most of us will need a mentor in order to make money online. It’s a lot easier to earn money if you can learn from people who are already earning a lot of money.

Many are lazy, many lack focus and many are not open to new ideas. One of the biggest problems is that it seems that most people are buying the same stuff and doing the same “techniques” in order to make money.

I think that, usually, if you want to earn a lot of money online, you need to come up with new stuff… don’t just be a follower. Just like your #7.

Thanks for stopping by Jens. Hope to see you around here.

I don’t think all of them are true. I am not spending a Penny in promotion of my websites, still I am making between $1500 to $3000 per month. My only investment is TIME. And if you want to show me the equation TIME + MONEY to justify your reasons, I am alright. I think all the seven reasons are not stated with proper analysis.

If you want to make money online without spending a dime, it’s still 110% possible, only thing is you need to have knowledge and creativity.

  8. Juggler said: 22nd March, 2008 at 8:37 pm

Well, still, as you said, Time = Money. So yeah, there’s still an investment. ;) Thought it’d be obvious already. Time to add it to the post I guess.

  9. Life is Colourful said: 22nd March, 2008 at 9:58 pm

Yes but it’s an excuse again, because finally everything comes down to the time we invest. In promoting my website, I doubt if I have spent a dime to promote. Everything is done naturally, by white had SEO methods - so it might go as an exception but coincidently most of the websites start making good money without spending a dime.

Hi Juggler, I will most likely stick around for a while :-)

I am also earning money online, and I don’t spend money advertising, but I spend quite a bit of money investing in various ebooks and training courses.

This way I use a lot of time reading and trying to understand how to be more creative and how to market my blog and affiliate programs, but at the same time I have to invest money in order to learn.

Life is Colourful, do you not invest money in ebooks and training courses? Or are you only talking about direct promotions of your websites?

That’s good to know Jens. :D

    Hi Juggler,

I love this post like anything.

” You limit yourself to one source of income” - This is the top most reason why most of the bloggers are not making money online. Really I was fumbled a lot once I lost my PR for my blog. Then I managed some how to gain money online through other alternatives.

Now I am happy with my make money online blog. Hope you’ll also with your blog….

All the best to bloom as a perfect blogger like John Chow…

the best way is to use a combination of different income sources.

  16. ti3n said: 23rd March, 2008 at 5:22 am

yeap. it makes sense. most people wanted to make money initially after seeing the successes of the others. but in the end, with a pr0 blog, it is hard to make some money out of it, n eventually tend to get lazy about the whole effort!!!

  17. Life is Colourful said: 23rd March, 2008 at 10:25 am

@ Jens Berget, no surprisingly I have not touched to any of the eBooks till date. Not even the one released by John Chow.

I have been making money since 2004, my only teacher in this money making exercise is my experiments.

I have started with less than $100 per month earnings at the beginning then slowly stabilized at $600-1000 per month back then in 2004. I have seen few months where the earning shot up more than $3K-4K from one single source. Even I know the reasons why it went down. But all this was occurring due to various experiments I was doing with my blogs and websites. Now I am quite stable to make $1500-$2000 per month.

But yes, I can suggest you one thing. Digitalpoint is the forum that teaches you a lot as well, much much more than your eBooks and training courses.

Another thing why newcomers to this whole make money online thing is that they read too much and opened themselves to too many ideas that will cause confusion and a hard time in deciding which action to take in order to start off.

  21. Mayank Rocks said: 23rd March, 2008 at 7:31 pm

True Facts. But first one isnt for me. I am lazy but still make a lot :p

    @ Falguin
    Well said.

  22. Yuhu said: 23rd March, 2008 at 9:04 pm

@Mayank Rocks That’s good for you. So do you have autoblogs or something that doesn’t need supervision? Can you share with us?

For me, I still believe that most people don’t make money online because of reason #1 - laziness. I might agree that there are exceptions, but it’s still hard to believe, don’t you think? Without doing any work, even at least when you’re starting, you can’t earn anything.

  23. Ophelia Nicholson said: 23rd March, 2008 at 11:41 pm

Really great article and so true that so many people expect to earn money online without investment and any kind of work

  24. Mayank Rocks said: 24th March, 2008 at 12:43 am

Laziness with a blog will not work. I dont make money from my blog - mayankrocks.com

It is from my teen forums. I had made a post saying, how easy it is to make money from active teen forums. I’ve been making money easily without much work since a long time. However things werent easy at the start. It is just great at this moment when the forum has already taken off. My forums - teenhut.net

well said. There are all the valid reasons for online failure.
I like the first one and the picture too. :D

  27. Jens P. Berget said: 24th March, 2008 at 3:48 pm

I am also trying various experiments, but I think my main problem is that I lack focus. I usually end up buying new ebooks and training courses, and I read a lot. I guess that I should take more action and do my own stuff instead of just trying to learn new stuff all the time.

I will visit Digitalpoint and see if that can help me. Thanks!

I really like your down to earth style of writing. A lot of other blogs, and I mean a LOT, have that cookie cutter feel to them, but not yours. Very useful info relayed in a way that anybody can understand. Thanks for the good read :)
