When we talk about ad serving, the first thing that we probably think about is the money that we’ll make through it. While I agree that displaying advertisements is supposed to let us generate income, I want to let you know that money isn’t everything when it comes to ad serving.

Money

Some webmasters tend to forget one very important thing as soon as they receive the payment for the ad from the advertiser. That thing is to give satisfaction to the advertiser, and make sure that he gets something that’s worth the money that he gave us.

Sometimes, we overprice our ad spaces because of certain factors like PageRank. Sure, your site’s PR might be 7, but will the advertiser be happy if he pays $100 per month for 50 impressions a day? I don’t think so. We should make sure that the advertiser is contented once the advertising period is over.

Remember that advertisers are paying you to help them make their sites known by the public. Don’t make false claims just to sell your ad spaces to them…

For example, you will tell them that your site gets visited by 1,000 people a day but in fact, your site gets less than 100 visits per day. I know that most advertisers won’t fall for this trick but still… I’d like to let everyone know that it’s bad, not only because you will disappoint the advertiser by not meeting his expectations, but also because you’re getting a certain amount of money which you don’t deserve.

To make this post short… Ad serving’s goal is for the publisher to earn AND for the advertisers to be HAPPY!

Here are some questions for you guys: Do you overprice your ad spaces? Do your advertisers regret purchasing ads from you? Please answer these by leaving a comment. Thanks!

Spot on… a lot of publishers overprice their advertising space. When selling advertising space it always pays to think of it from the other persons perspective.

It also pays to understate and over deliver rather than overstate and under deliver.

I’m actually one of the advertisers here. I got a text link, and although it isn’t giving me tons of clicks, I am getting some backlinks from it! I actually plan on getting a banner here as I do like the site and I do think it has some great articles! I agree with this post though, I have found some sites (www.ewebtalk.com) and some others where a LOT of people bought advertising from and the owners of the site and they don’t promote or add content.

You hit the nail on the head with this one. Advertising has never been only about big bucks, although it’s clearly a factor.

Remembering that advertisers are just as important as the money can mean more successful ad campaigns, which relates into more money ironically.
