This is the first chapter of the series “Blog Cash Hunt”. I’m dedicating this to people who are new to blogging and need certain information to start a blog the right way. Hopefully, after you guys read this post, you’ll know what blogging is all about, and what to expect when blogging. Enjoy!

Definitions and All That

Stuff about blogging

Definition of a blog

A blog is basically an online journal in which one person (a blogger) publishes posts. The posts can revolve around any topic that the blogger chooses.

Need some more definitions? Here they are.

“A blog (short for weblog) is an online journal or diary of an individual’s opinions and latest news that is updated regularly, in chronological order. Many blogs allow visitors to make comments, or ‘postings’ in response to the blogger, or ask questions.”

Source: NowWeAreTalking Glossary

“A blog is a publication of personal thoughts, experiences, and web links. It is updated frequently and is usually a mixture of what is happening in a person’s life and what is happening on the web or in the media.”

Fred from Newest on the Net wrote a brief post entitled “What is a Blog?”. It’s pretty interesting and it should help newbies understand what a blog is better.

Definition of blogging

Before you blog, you should know what it’s all about! Blogging is writing in an online journal, which is called a blog. There are lots of blogs on the net, and new ones are being established day after day. I can say that blogging is one of the most popular online “hobbies”.

That’s about it for the definition of blogging; it’s as simple as writing in an online journal. :)

Definition of a blogger

A blogger is someone who maintains a blog. A blogger who focuses on his experiences and self reflections may be called an escribitionist.

Definition of a blogroll

A blogroll is a collection of links owned by the blog owner. Oftentimes, blogrolls contain links which are liked by the blogger. There are some occasions when a blogroll contains paid links. This means that the blogger was paid to place the links in the blogroll. We’ll talk more about paid links in the next parts of this series.

Definition of RSS

RSS is an acronym for Really Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary. It allows people to be constantly updated about your blog without having to visit your blog. All they have to do is have an RSS aggregator and subscribe to your RSS feed.

Beginners’ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Here are some FAQs related to blogging and making money by blogging. They’re basic, so they’re aimed to beginners. :)

Q: Is making a blog easier than making a regular site?
A: Yes. A blog is easier because you can easily update it without having to know much about codes and other technical stuff. :D

Q: Can I just copy-paste articles so I won’t need to write? I’m just here to make money anyway.
A: Copy-pasting articles without permission (a.k.a. plagiarizing) is a big no-no. Aside from the fact that it’s a violation of the law, you can make MORE money by producing original content. Trust me.

Q: How long will it take me to make $1,000,000?
A: It all depends on your efforts. If you just set up a blog and wait for the cash, you’re obviously not going to get it.

Q: Will creating more blogs bring me more money?
A: Only if you maintain the quality of all the blogs. It’s better to start with one blog and concentrate on it. That way, you can create outstanding content, attract more readers, and earn more money.

Q: I don’t know how to set up a blog. Is blogging not for me?
A: You know, not being savvy doesn’t mean that blogging is not for you. There are web hosts especially made for blogs (like WordPress.com), so you don’t need to worry about installation. If you want your own domain for your blog, there are web hosts which offer an automatic blog installer software. There are also some which install blogs for free.

Things to Remember About Blogging

job fairsBlogging should not be considered as a chore, unless you’re a professional blogger. If you’re a professional blogger, then it’s your task to blog. You can’t escape it — you have to do it! But if you’re blogging as another blogger who wants to share his thoughts with the world, then you have the freedom to blog when you want, where you want. If you don’t want to blog, then don’t blog! No one will shoot you if you don’t blog for a day.

You may fail or succeed in making money by blogging. The result will depend on your efforts. Failing or succeeding in making money by blogging is not determined by chance or luck. It’s determined by the time and efforts that you dedicate to your blog. If you create a blog and do not create posts to gain readers, you will be a total failure. You can’t expect that “Hello, world!” post to do all the magic, can you?

Here’s a post from me which helps you realize that your blog can’t make money by itself. As I said, succeeding will require your hard work and time. :)

Summary

The first part of the Blog Cash Hunt series contains the definitions of words frequently used in the blogosphere. There are also questions which are almost always aksed by blogging newbies. The questions have been answered to save you some time. ;) There are also a couple of friendly reminders to give you an idea how to properly run a blog.

Watch out for the next part of this series. It’s all about starting a blog, choosing a host, and other related stuff. Don’t forget to subscribe!

Great article for all new bloggers! There aren’t enough good ones like this out there, because when we’re new we don’t know enough to write something like this, and then when we get better at blogging, we don’t find reason to write an article that would be considered so “obvious”. It’s so important to write for the beginners too, and this definitely would have helped me when I first started blogging. The thing that confused me most, probably, was RSS - but we’re all different of course. Thanks for sharing this; I am definitely subscribing! :)
