Blogging Tips I Learned from School

Posted by Mike | Filed under Blogging

Hi y’all. So you must have noticed that I haven’t posted for the past umm… three days. I’ve been very busy (as I told you I’d be) lately thus I had no time to post. Anyway, as I was doing some school stuff yesterday, I realized that there were blogging tips that I learned from school. They’re pretty basic actually, but to be a successful blogger you have to live by these tips. I’d like to keep this post short as I still have to do a lot of projects — they’re due tomorrow! Yikes!

Without further ado, here are the blogging tips that I learned from school.

handshake1. Be friendly. In school, you have to be nice to your classmates and other people around you. No one likes a grouchy person, right? Having a lot of friends can actually help especially if you need to get something done in an instant. For example, you have a presentation to make and you have tons of assignments piled up. Maybe you can ask your friend to start with the presentation (if he has time) to help you. That will save you a lot of time!

In blogging, you need to have friends as well. You have to network with your fellow bloggers to further bring your blog to the next level. Imagine if you were maintaining a blog by yourself and no other bloggers gave you tips to improve your blog. Of course, your blog will be where it is and won’t improve! During certain times when you have no time to blog, other bloggers can help you by guest posting.

You shouldn’t be friendly only to your fellow bloggers — you have to be nice and kind to your readers as well! If they weren’t there, your blog would be a lonely and boring place on the web.

Bottom line is… in blogging, it is very important to have a good network. ;)

fist2. Don’t give up. I admit, there were times that I was given too much projects which were SO strenuous. Imagine compiling all your files from the first semester of the year to the last day of the school year in just three days. That’s not all, we (my classmates and I) were also asked to write summaries of certain books, and a lot of other tedious tasks. We even had to finish an experiment a week before the final exams (this week)! Even though everything seemed impossible to accomplish, I worked hard and finished all the things that needed to be done. Instead of thinking “I can’t do this anymore!” and giving up, I did my best to get everything done on time… and with quality! I never submitted a sloppy project.

This can also be applied in blogging. If you’re having a hard time in establishing a good readership base, don’t give up and think of a new thing to do. Instead, exert extra efforts into attracting people and getting more subscribers. Don’t think that you’ll fail — if you do, you definitely will! Be positive and do everything in your power to reach success.

3. Set standards. I never settle for anything below “excellent” when it comes to school stuff. Never. If I finish something and then realize that it doesn’t meet my standards, I do it all over again. Why? Because I believe that setting standards will help you achieve greater heights!

This is also true to blogging. If you write posts just for the sake of having something published, you will never attain that “1,000 subscribers” goal or something. You always have to set standards like your posts should be at least 300 words long or something like that. By doing so, you do not only deliver great content, you also learn how to be disciplined (which I truly believe is an important thing).

calendar4. Plan ahead. Whenever the week ends, I always write down all the things that I have to do and when I’d do them. By doing so, I know when I have some free time to go outside, buy a frap from Starbucks maybe, and enjoy. When you organize a schedule, you can easily tell what you need to do on a specific time. You will finish everything that you need to do and you will not end up cramming.

In blogging, planning ahead is also important. If you know that you have to attend important meetings for one straight week, you should probably schedule a post telling your readers that you’ll be away. It’s also good to schedule posts so that your readers won’t get bored of your blog having the same old post on the front page for two weeks already.

Planning is not just about scheduling posts, mind you. It also means that if you’re thinking of running a contest, you should plan first. When will it start? When will it end? When will you give out the prizes? Things like those… If you don’t plan, your blog events will surely be a disaster!

Exams5. Always do your best in everything. In every endeavor in school, I always strive hard and do my best. I never take anything for granted because I know that it will have an effect on my standings in the future. I try very hard to ace all my exams and all, and even if I don’t get 100% in some of them, I still feel great because I know that I did everything I can to get an excellent grade. If I weren’t like that and if I just breeze through the exams, I’d probably get not-so-good scores. And I’d surely regret it!

Just like in doing school stuff, you also have to do your very best in blogging. Always! When writing posts, give it your best shot. Always check for grammatical errors, see if you had typos, etc. Who knows? Someone might read your superb posts and hire you as a professional writer or something. By doing your best, great opportunities will come to you and you will achieve success that you’ve been longing for.

Well guys, that’s it for now. I know it’s kinda short but yeah… I have to finish lots of stuff. By the way, I’d like to thank those who sent me their answers to the contest riddle #2. You guys rock! :mrgreen:

Till then guys. Ciao! Don’t ya go anywhere else. ;) For those who are new, you might want to subscribe now. You won’t regret it. Promise!

P.S. Wish me luck, the final round of the Math contest will be this Friday already (and it’s Pi day! 3/14! Yay!). :cool:

    I wonder why be hardworking and productive is not in the list. :mrgreen:

    This is the most important that helped me graduate from high school I guess. Anyway, I don’t think the main syllabus of a school helps much to improve a student’s attitude nowadays, it is the co-curricular activities that have let us learned and network a lot.

    Apart from these, I also think that it is vital for a student to self-learn some extra skills that are not taught in school, such as personal finance management or, umm, blogging, perhaps? :-)

    Wayne: Lemme see.. probably because I’m naturally hardworking, such that I didn’t have to learn it from school? Lol. :D

    Thanks Yuhu.

    Damn it, we lost the math contest. :( Had a bad Pi day as a result. LOL. We just got 4th place because of a stupid mistake. If it weren’t for that mistake, we could have gotten first! Anyways…

    Sure since I have been blogging(December) I have been so many times wanting to give up although I just keep plugging away at it. I don’t know if it’s an addiction, enjoyment, chore, or what but I don’t stop!

    I’ve known a nice blogger who answers all my WP related questions. He always replies (I know he’s busy) and if he couldn’t solve the problem, he gave some link suggestions. He must’ve been sincere since I think googling also takes a minute or two of tour time.

    If I managed to solve the issue, I always credit him with a link or two. Hope that helps some traffic :)

    @point #2:
    totally agree, Jug! everything begins in your mind. you are what you think. however you word that, nothing or nobody determines your success but your self.

  15. Louis Liem said: 30th March, 2008 at 9:27 pm

    @point #3:
    you can also set a standard like: “how’s this post will meet my readers’ needs?” furthermore: “how to do it without leaving my blog’s focus?”

    if you can’t, maybe you better not post. find another thing to write.
    this way you can satisfy 2 aspects for your readers

    @point #4:
    very true, with the flood of information on the internet, you need to be selective about which one you’re gonna talk about in your blog. will they still worth being talked about if you post it 2 weeks later?
    some posts are worthy enough to make you do a little adjustment on your schedule and post it like…right now!

  17. Louis Liem said: 30th March, 2008 at 9:40 pm

    @point #5:
    but don’t neglect your posting frequency. if you need 2 weeks to check, re-check, cross-check you article, typos, then you’re over doing it.

    IMHO, do your best in a timely manner. if you have a 2 days deadline, whatever result you make-as long as you did your best for those 2 days-, just hit the “Publish” button!
