Choosing The Right Domain Name

Posted by Mike | Filed under Domains, SEO

Choosing the right domain name is very crucial. It can affect your search engine rankings and your website’s visibility. People often think a lot before purchasing a domain name. Sometimes, after a person has decided which domain name to use, the domain that he wanted has already been taken.

When choosing a domain name, you have to be fast, because someone might take it if you can’t decide quickly. But don’t just purchase without thinking — you might regret it. Ask yourself the following questions before buying a domain name.

Is the domain name recognizable? Does the domain name describe your product?

Obviously, your domain name must be your company’s name or be atleast related to your products.

If your company is called The Black Shoe, consider the domain names theblackshoe.com or blackshoe.com. But remember, a keyword-rich domain name would rank higher in search engines than the company’s name itself. So consider buying shoes.com or anything related to your product and redirect that domain to your main site to get more visitors.

Is the domain name easy to remember?

If your website is named John Jack Doe’s Very Nice and Useful Website, do not buy johnjackdoesveryniceandusefulwebsite.com! This will make it hard to remember, and your visitors might forget your URL because it is too long!

Instead, buy johnjack.com, jjdoe.com or something similar.

Is the domain name readable/pronounceable?

It will really be better if your domain name is readable or pronounceable. Imagine having the domain name hhgsuryguiryt123.net. How will you tell people about your website? I think it would really be embarrassing, especially to your customers, if you cannot even pronounce your own domain name.

Is the domain name unique?

You might want to buy theimagescanners.com for your company The Image Scanners, which scans images for a price. But what if there is a completely different site which uses the domain imagescanners.com and sells scanners (the hardware)?

The best thing to do is to backorder the domain to ensure that all your visitors are lead to your website. If not, just stick with the imagescanners.com and be sure to tell all your customers that imagescanners.com is NOT yours.

If you have the budget, try buying the name with all the extensions (.com, .net, .org, etc…) to be certain that it would be completely yours. Just redirect the others to the main site so that you won’t have to copy all your site’s content again and again. ;)
