Google Analytics Basics

Posted by Mike | Filed under Uncategorized

Google Analytics is a great feature if you have a Google AdWords account. You grab a simple code and paste it into your header or footer templates and you get some great data on your traffic. I log in an analyze my traffic a few times a week to understand where my visitors are coming from.

This is a great tutorial built by Google title, “Beginning Analytics: Interpreting and Acting on Your Data.”

Could you please tell me how do you use the data ? I mean after you know how much visitor get your site direct ar through search engine, how will this affect your strategy?

Jane, actually people don’t rely on counting the number of visitors but they check where is the traffic coming from and they try to target more traffic from that area etc.

Jane, I use the date for several purposes.

First, it is a great way to see where all of your traffic is coming from. You will see how many people have you bookmarked or type in your domain directly (direct) and what sites refer you the most traffic.

Second, you will see what key words are driving traffic to your site. This will give you an idea if your SEO is working and the most popular key words. You can do this by all traffic or individual search engines.

Third, you will be able to see if your paid ads through Google are working.

Your server stats will be much more accurate when it comes to pageviews, unique visitors, etc.

    Hope that helps!

Just a little note: Google analytics is a great feature even if you are not using Adwords (or/and AdSense). ;)
Google analytics is one of the most accurate traffic measurement tools available. The “benchmark” feature in Google analytics is great if you are looking for new traffic targets for your site.
