I Got Attacked by a Splogger!

Posted by Mike | Filed under Blogging

Splogs… Sploggers… *sigh*

PlagiaristSome of you might have read my post entitled Argh! I just HATE Those Splogs!. It’s a post about people who own automated blogs, scrape my content and post everything without permission.

Well, I got used to them… but I recently encountered a splogger who seems to be different than the rest. He’s more unprofessional, he thinks he can make money by scraping content (I assume this is so because he placed AdSense units on his blog) and he’s got a blog full of crap and copied feeds!

Who’s this Splogger?

Well, apparently, this guy (Oh, I can’t believe I just gave him a backlink! Anyway, it’s a nofollow, so no PR juice for the little splogger! ) seems to be a subscriber (or at least his automated poster thingy is subscribed to my feed). Let me tell you some more things about this splogger…

He’s lazy! Yep, he is. He’s too lazy to link to the original author and put “Author has posted a very interested post today… blah blah…” before each post. Of course he’s also lazy to write his own posts.

He’s much more unprofessional than the other sploggers! He just can’t seem to get his job done the right way… I think he gets all the feeds that he encounters, regardless if they’re full feeds or not. If he even wants people to stay on his blog (and click his ads), he should NOT copy feeds which aren’t full.

cut articles

He’s a bandwidth waster. He really is. Since he copied my posts, the images that I used were also scraped… so… he’s WASTING MY BANDWIDTH! (Not really… I bet he’s not getting enough traffic to crash my server.) When he copied my post about monetizing 404 pages, he also got the images. I hope his “readers” will be able to see my URL right there…

He’s SUCKS! Well… yeah, he does. Take a look at this awesome screen shot that I just took:

last laugh

Haha! I guess I still get the last laugh, huh?

Tips to Stop Sploggers from Scraping Your Content

Install a feed copyrighter plug-in. I’m certain that this will let people know that the content is yours. It will also embarrass the sploggers that copy your content. I used this before, but now I’m using a different plug-in.

Block the sploggers’ IP addresses. Their trackbacks come with their IPs, so make sure to block ‘em all!

Blog about them! Yep! I think this is a brilliant idea. Once they scrape your content again, they’ll get your post about their very bad deeds. And then… you know what will happen… they will be “posting” something really bad about themselves (this post’s purpose will be served soon).

I applaud the way you’ve decided to deal with the splogger. There’s nothing like being caught with one’s hand in the cookie jar. Bravo, Juggler!

Good post. Just did a similar one on scrapers - I guess they’re the same thing. Did he grab just one of your articles or several? Also, have you considered reporting him?

Wow. And I thought I had bad sploggers over at my blog. This is ridiculous. At least it’s fairly safe to say that his blog won’t get much links with headlines like this one.

Also: I believe he’s using a lot of AdWords ads on his blog, if you e-mail Google about the content-copy issue they will suspend his account.

Sirius Lee: Haha, thanks for the applaud!

Chanya: He’s been scraping whole articles since October. I’m going to report him.

Tanner: I’m going to kill his Google account!

Your advice: Block the sploggers’ IP addresses. Their trackbacks come with their IPs, so make sure to block ‘em all!

My response: How exactly do you block them? There’s this very annoying splogger who seems to grab my content immediately and I know it’s not a legit site. I know his IP but I do not know how to block him. I use Wordpress.

    Thanks.

P.S. Another question for you: What plug-in are you using to install a feed copyrighter plug-in? I’m using the latest WP version 2.3.1

    Thanks again!

Hey Stephen, thanks for dropping by! I’m using RSS Feed Signature. :)

Any news on the progress of this situation yet? I’m eagerly awaiting to hear if you have received a response from Google?

    Google never replied. Oh well…

Just a great FYI: I’ve reported his AdSense account. He will get a double penalty because aside from breaking the AdSense TOS, he just broke the webmaster guidelines. I hate splogs. :p
