Search engine optimization (SEO) is often thought of as complex thing. Most webmasters think that it’s a pain in the butt to gain rankings. Well, before you complain and think of strategies on how to optimize your site, here’s one of the most basic yet most important SEO tips…

Be sure you’re optimizing for the proper keyword(s). Sure, your skateboarding site may be ranking high for the term “your-very-long-and-unique-domain.tld”, but you may not be ranking for “skateboarding”. Even if you rank well for a term but it’s not often used as a search term, your ranking is useless. Research first before you optimize your site, otherwise, you’ll be wasting lots of effort, time, and possibly money.

Well, I just had to remind everyone of this tip. There are lots of people who are having this problem, and I can see quite a big number of them in webmaster discussion boards. Their sites rank well for some terms but aren’t getting so much search engine traffic. The reason? Wrong keywords were targeted.

As funny as it is to state the obvious, you bring up a valid point in that we all need to be reminded of one of the most important SEO factors.

Focusing on keywords is vital to a website’s success.

Yeh it is an obvious, but I know that I did this in the early days and I am sure many other people would do.

I think it’s an excellent point not just in SEO but in all areas where self-taught people jump in. You aren’t going to be a Fortune 500 company starting out just as you aren’t going to be a Photoshop wizard in the beginning. The fundamentals are there because they are integral to making the more advanced stuff work.

Good tip. A good foundation is to target specific keywords relevant to what your providing. Although a top spot for a generic term i.e “golf” would bring lots of traffic, it is very difficult to rank and you may not be specific to what your offering- i.e golf shoes. Targetting more specific keywords means highly targetted traffic which means better conversion rates! :)
