Right Keywords: How to Select Them and How to Use Them
Posted by Mike | Filed under SEOHmm… I guess you’re reading this since you’re planning to build a site and really optimize it to get great traffic from search engines, huh? Or maybe your site seems like a failure and you want to ‘renew’ it by changing your keywords? Whatever your reason is, I’m here to help you in choosing the right keywords and using them.
Targeting the correct keywords are just one of the most important factors in getting high search engine rankings, so basically, you should give effort in doing this to boost your site’s SE rankings.
Let’s get it on!
How can I get the right keywords/key phrases to target?
To determine the best keywords, I recommend using a keyword tracker (Wordtracker is a good choice). A keyword tracker is a tool that can help you find the most popular keywords in a niche by telling you the number of searches a specific key phrase or keyword got in a specific period of time. The information that you can gather by using a keyword tracker will definitely aid you in determining the keywords to target.
Once you have collected enough information through the keyword tracker, then it’s time to use the information that you just got. What was the most “searched for” key term (what is the most popular)? How many results does it have in the major search engines?
The most popular keyword for your niche would probably be the one that you should target. For example, if your site is an online arcade which offers free games for everyone and the most searched term for that niche is “free online games”, then you should target that key phrase.
Using the keyword tracker, get information on the keyword “free online games”. The keyword tracker will give you some synonymous terms as well like “games”, “free online arcade” and other related stuff.
You must not target “games” as that term is too broad. You must not target “free online and flash games in an arcade for everyone” because that is just soooooo specific! Target keywords/search terms which are short but specific enough to describe what you offer.
Just target the most popular ones and (if possible), the ones that are popular yet do not have a lot of search results (meaning less competitors for you!)
How can I make use of the right keywords?
Those good keywords will be nothing if you do not make use of them. To make them effective, you should:
• Use relevant keywords as your anchor text.
• Put them in your META tags.
• Put the most important ones in your TITLE tag.
• Use them as tags when submitting your site to social bookmarking sites (or whatever kind of site where you could submit your sites to).
These are just some of the things that you should do to make use of your keywords, but they are the most important ones, in my opinion.
