Smarter Spammers

Posted by Mike | Filed under Blogging

I’ve had several experiences with spammers, but this time, I experienced something different. Spammers are getting smarter and smarter; it seems that they’re improving their “spamming technology” to get some links from related blogs.

I’m a bit annoyed with how they [spammers] try to get their links on our blogs by spending so much time in developing different spamming techniques when they can just go to one blog at a time and leave an honest-to-goodness comment. I understand that it’s much easier to SPAM 100 comments at a time, but wouldn’t 10 approved comments be better than 0 approved comments out of 100 submitted comments? Ugh…

While I was checking my comments a while ago, I noticed three different “persons” with the same comment, but different e-mails. I wasn’t really shocked, but the thing is, the spam bots kinda sound like real people if you don’t pay that much attention to the comment structure and the URL they gave.

If you can’t read the text on the image (I doubt that you can), here’s the text:

“I found your blog on google and read a few of your other posts. I just added you to my Google News Reader. Keep up the good work. Look forward to reading more from you in the future.

Tina Russell”

Well, the spammer did a good job, but still… people are way smarter than spam bots! :P In case you’re wondering where the comment went, it’s in.. uhh… the trash bin? Yeah. It’s right there. ;)

I receive quite a lot of spam comments on my blog lately - and you are right, spammers do seem to be a lot more smarter than before. :(
    I usually reject comments that:
-Have no relation to the post
-Praises the blog (this sort of comments are getting more and more common)
    -Contains URLs to unusual sites
-Comments that end up being caught by Akismet anyway…

We can only hope for the day where there are no spam. :p

Yeah, I wonder if that day will come… Hah, but it wouldn’t be fun if there are totally no spammers. You won’t get to press that “Delete all” button. :P

I pretty much delete comments that it is not obvious that they read my post. The comment is worthless unless it adds something to the original post, even when they’re saying of how great I am.

Still you are lucky, you are getting some spammers that sound like real readers, I am frustrated with real estate agents and casino spammers. They don’t even understand that what their Name says cannot be the message as well. LOL! Surprisingly, Akismet is failing to catch them.

ADAC: Yeah… spammers praise you, but their comments are worthless. Oh well..

Life is Colourful: Man, I just hope that those spammers mean what they’re “saying”. I’d be half-thankful if they did!
