Spam Attack!

Posted by Mike | Filed under Blogging, Make Money Online, Miscellaneous

Spam attackEveryone hates spam, right? From e-mail spam to blog comments spam… everyone despises that four-letter word. But even though you’re getting annoyed with it, spammers just won’t stop! They’d send you spam and laugh their heads of after doing so. I’ve been getting a hell lot of spam these days, and I’d just want everyone to know about my experiences which ultimately cause exasperation into my life!

Spammers out there, I’m warning you… your doomsday is just around the corner!

Blog Comment Spam

I posted about smarter spammers over here, in hopes that those freaks would stop sending in annoying and malicious comments. After a few days, I never received nasty one-liners and redundant comments anymore. Cool, I thought. I knew that it wasn’t the effect of my post; it was just that the spammers stopped harassing my blog. That’s fine with me, as long as they don’t attack me with annoying comments…

After a week, when I logged in to my dashboard, I saw around thirty (30) comments awaiting moderation. I was shocked when I saw that around 15 (that’s 50%!) of them were the same, but had different names. What the hell? Ughh.. sorry spammers (Spammers? Or just spammer?), your comments go straight to outer space where no one could ever read them!

I guess I can’t stop blog spammers from doing what they want… but I sure can stop them from getting what they want (the links)! Wow, I feel powerful!

E-mail Spam

emailI usually get lots of e-mails saying that I won $1,000 in cash, and in order to claim the prize, I have to give my bank account to them or something like that. What’s funny is that I only used that particular e-mail address for having transactions with DP members. C’mon ya spammers, I already bought something from you, and yet you want to get more of my money? Stop the stupid thing. Stop dreaming… start working! There are many ways to make money online, you don’t have to go the wrong way by spamming and scamming, ya know…

You’re not only “legendary” spammers. You’re “legendary” scammers!

I don’t tolerate these kinds of e-mails, which is why they go straight to the junk folder. Would you imagine that I got around two hundred (200) spam mails yesterday? Sucks like hell, I know.

Forum Private Messaging Spam

I’m pretty active on the Digital Point forums (DP), and what can I say? It’s not always good to be an active member especially on the marketplace section of the forums. Whenever I post a new thread saying that I am buying something, there’s always a person who sends me a private message with an affiliate link, totally unrelated offers, and digital goods/services whose prices are CLEARLY out of my budget. To those people (ermm… spammers) I don’t want to be mean but, DID I ASK FOR WHAT YOU JUST SENT ME? No! So get outta here and don’t waste my inbox space!

They probably think that I’m that stupid to buy products that I didn’t even ask for. Want to earn through the forums? Then don’t spam others and start your own freaking thread!

Tips for Spammers Out There

This section is not for spammers to gain more knowledge on how to spam. Hell no. Instead, I’ll try to be nice and kind to you by sharing some things that you can do instead of spamming!

If you want to make money, work hard and try to find your targeted prospects. Don’t send e-mails to 1,000,000 people you don’t even know. Chances are they won’t even read your e-mails! Instead, tell your friends or relatives about what you’re selling first and let them help you spread the word. Word of mouth is very effective, you know.

To those who are sending the annoying forum PMs, please just STOP it. You won’t get any sales if the people are annoyed with you. Just start your own thread and wait for INTERESTED PEOPLE to contact you. Got it? Awesome.

If you want to get more links to your blog/site, don’t spam blogs with your ugly one-liners or “intelligently constructed spam comments”. Read the posts that interest you, then leave your honest comment. Blogs that are worth the comments usually have smart authors. The authors often have comments moderated first before they’re posted, so don’t waste your effort in spamming. You’d probably end up with 1 accepted comment out of 100 comments that you posted. It’s always better to have 10 out of 10 comments accepted than 1 out of 100 comments!

To my loyal readers: I’d like to know how much spam you get each day and how you deal with it. Do you use certain blog plug-ins, e-mail software add-ons or something? Let me know by leaving your *cough* non-spam *cough* comments.

P.S. I hope you liked the can of spam with hands and feet! I spent one and a half minutes of my time doing that. ;)

Very very good post Juggler!! I completely agree with your tips. I also receive a lot of emails from people, usually they are pharma stuff. I hate them so much! But it’s ok, they end up in my trash anyway.

I’m looking forward to the next riddle of your contest this week!

Hi Juggler, I’m Con, I don’t have a blog yet but I think I will have to start one as I found inspiration in yours.

I also get spam mails in my inbox, especially in my Yahoo Mail. I switched to Gmail but I still get a few spams here and there. Like you, the spams in my mail just get deleted, I don’t fall for those pathetic offers. It’s good that you gave the spammers some tips. It will help them get a life.

Thank god my new blog is not filled with spam yet! I bought one a couple of months ago 400+/- visitors a month and 100% of them were spam visitors. We had a nasty problem on my business forum until we installed a plug-in that has caught 100% of the spam so far.

Your comment on the one-liners hit home, I generally delete the “great blog”, “cool stuff” or “cool blog look at mine”(and it links to a site that sells pills).

The funny thing about spam: It all originated from that piece of meat in the metan can…

Seriously, there ain’t many spammers who realize that they have to get more creative than annoying the hell out of us. Why can’t they do just what Microsoft did - practically take over anything in its path [i.e. “word of mouth”]?

Really great post! I get a few hundred spam comments a day now, and it absolutely sucks. But after installing Akismet, it catches it all - thank goodness for that! And I use Yahoo Mail and also get hundreds of spam a day there too, but it’s all sent to the spam folder right away, with maybe one slipping through now and then.

Yes, spam is horrible, but it’ll never stop. People try to manipulate everything! Thanks for the great article though.

hola dude! Thanks for dropping by. What a good post you have there! I wonder without akismet I would have been in hell! My blog gets around 100 spam comments each day about porn movies and credit cards stuffs like that you know. I love akismet! It is absolutely the best plugin around. Akismet is shooting down the spam comments. But if somehow akismet misses a spam comment which usually it doesnt, I either edit the comment or mark it as spam. Poor scammers I wonder if they will ever learn!

Bravo! That’s a brave post. You raise my spirit to fight the spammer, even though I don’t know how to do it. Everyday I get spam mail in my private mail…That are very annoyed! I just delete those manually…If I don’t delete the spams in three days, I’ll get my inbox full of those.

Tanvir: Hola! Good to know that spam stuff don’t stand a chance against you! ;)

    Tay: Yeah, you’re welcome. :D

One thing you can find out from getting a blog spam is that your blog is getting famous! Am I right?

I use Akismet and I think it does a very good job. Only less than 5 spams out of-I don’t know exactly the numbers-spams got away.

For my gmail. It works well till now. Only sometimes they generate false alarm, making me have to check the spam folder for non-spam mails!
    kinda irony, huh?
