Spammers Aren’t So Smart After All!

Posted by Mike | Filed under Blogging

Last February, I published a post wherein I concluded that spammers are getting smarter and smarter as days pass. I think I was wrong — spammers aren’t so smart after all!

Before, I got spam comments like this:

“I found your blog on google and read a few of your other posts. I just added you to my Google News Reader. Keep up the good work. Look forward to reading more from you in the future.

Tina Russell”

Weeks passed and I never heard from “Tina Russell” and her clones. I didn’t block her IP though — I used to love pressing the “delete” button! Just today, I got several comments like this:

“I really love this site. I just dugg you!”

There seems to be a gradual decline in the “intelligence” of spammers. Dude, if you ever want your spam comment to be approved, then spend some time to at least research about the blog that you’re spamming. You see, I’ve been banned from Digg a looong time ago and yet you’re here, saying that you just dugg my blog? Oh puh-leeze! Gimme a break. Try another trick, will ya? I’ll be expecting a brighter spam comment from you, Mr. Person whose IP is 144 [dot] 232 [dot] 173 [dot] 50.

Now, I’m not encouraging you guys to think of better spamming techniques and bomb other blogs with spam. I’m just trying to tell everyone that even if you think of different ways for your spam to bypass the moderation queue, we can still detect your spammy motives! ;) Bloggers who care for their blogs CAREFULLY moderate each comment. We scrutinize to keep our blogs civilized! (Did that make sense?)

Just a short post for now (call it a rant, if you want). I might be back later with another post if time allows me to write. Please excuse me for now, I’m going to the mall and I’ll get a frap from Starbucks. It’s so hot in here; the air conditioner can’t even handle the heat! See ya later, I’m just gonna chill a bit. ;)

Yep, those stuff suck like hell. I get a lot of those too, but it’s not just from “Mr. Daniel”. There are a lot of different “people” who send in the same comment. Bye for now, I’m off to Starbucks~!

Well, if they change the term used from Dugg to Stumbled, would you get baited?

Wayne: Course not LOL… I’ve seen too much Daniel’s, Tina’s and other “people” who leave comments saying that they’ve added me to their Google reader, stumbled me, and the worst, dugg me.

Damn it, just realized it’s another type of spam…I approved most of them last month, gee…can anyone suggest me a good anti-spam plug in for wordpress blog?

Ms. Fitness: IMO, Akismet is teh ownz. But if Akismet can’t handle the spam, then I guess it’s up to you to determine which is spam or not. :) Here’s a good list of WP anti-spam plug-ins.

I think my blog is also victim of such spam comments. In the past, I might have had approved few of them thinking they are real ones. It’s worth going back to comments and delete those spam comments.

The fact that most spam is done via automated means means that spam will never be “smart”.
My moderation technique always prevents such comments from appearing in the first place, since it’s very easy to tell which is spam or not (also thanks to the fact that dumb spammers almost always leave duplicate spam comments).
