The Title is The Key!

Posted by Mike | Filed under SEO

Are you wondering why your website (which you think is better than the others) is getting some low search engine rankings? Are other people’s sites pissing you off because they’re on the top 10 results and yours is not? Well, you might have some problems in your TITLE tag.

The TITLE tag is very important because search engines use it to determine what your website is about. It helps the search engines show the best search results and deliver the most relevant sites to the surfers.

To further optimize your site, your TITLE tag must be given some importance. Here are some tips to use the TITLE tag efficiently when it comes to SEO.

Don’t forget to put it. A site without a title is like a book without a name. If your site’s title is simply “Untitled-1″, then it just means that you are not serious with your site and you just want your site to be one of millions of sites which are not known.

Make it unique. Your title should be unique. It should be used to help your website stand out and not be one of the many websites out there. It should give your site a brand (much like Google, Yahoo and Squidoo)!

Put some relevance in it. Your title should contain what your website is about to help search engines determine your site’s topic. Put some keywords, but do NOT bomb your TITLE tag with too much of those keywords. Something descriptive like “The WWW Observer - SEO blog” (for this site) will do, just don’t put all your keywords in your title.

Keep it short. Don’t make your title too long like “My Incredible Site: The Best Thing Since My Brother’s Friend’s Birthday!”. Keep it at 4-6 words since not all of the words will be there when your site appears on search engine results and it’s just so improper. It looks bad and it IS bad. Make your title nice and neat. Be descriptive and imaginative when thinking of a good title.

Don’t mess it up! Some people hurry too much that they make typos. And if you do too, your site will look unprofessional. So be sure to check your stuff for some typos and errors. ;)

In my opinion it is far better to word your title tags with the visitors in mind instead of search engines. Title tags are of limited importance to rankings. Concentrate on the more important factors to get to the top of the search results. Once you are there you want a title tag that encourages search users to click on your listing. Creating a keyword rich but uninteresting title may lead your potential visitors to look elsewhere. Never forget that your ultimate goal in SEO is to attract visitors above all else.
