What is the Webmasters’ Browser?

Posted by Mike | Filed under Miscellaneous

I have done a research on what most webmasters use as their web browser, and I can say that the study that I have done will help new webmasters choose the right browser and the add-ons/plug-ins to install.

Web browser pollI ran a poll on some webmaster forums and the poll results were very similar to each other. Obviously and as expected, most webmasters like to use Mozilla Firefox because of its flexibility and security. Some have voted on other browsers like Internet Explorer and Opera, but the results clearly say that Firefox is the best choice especially for webmasters like us.

In this post, I will give a brief review for each one of them so that new webmasters will know what to choose.

Mozilla Firefox

In my opinion, this is THE web browser for all. It’s free, fast, secure and flexible. According to my research, ten (10) out of thirteen (13) webmasters prefer Firefox over other browsers. Why do most webmasters go for Firefox? The answer is simple — it’s because Firefox is free and it’s very customizable. You can change the theme to modify the look and feel of your browser. You can also install additional extensions to further suit your browsing preferences.

What add-ons or extensions do webmasters use in order to make browsing and working easier?

I’ll list the mostly used add-ons/extensions that webmaster use here, and hopefully, those add-ons can also help your life be more comfortable.

I won’t put live links in this post since there’ll be a lot of outbound links if I do that. If you want to download the some add-ons/extensions that I list here, feel free to search for it on your favorite search engine.

1. Google Toolbar - This is the toolbar of THE search engine. Why in the world would a webmaster not have this!? In my point of view, this is a must for all webmasters. This can help you submit your site to directories through AutoFill, and it also gives some information about the page that you’re browsing. There’s also a PageRank checker on this toolbar, and it can really help you monitor the PR of sites (though it doesn’t update in real time).

2. AdSense Notifier - This is for people who are so restless and want to check their AdSense earnings every second of their life. It’s a very good thing to have if you want to know if you earned some bucks after a few seconds!

3. StumbleUpon Toolbar - This thing is excellent for discovering new sites that can be of our interest. We need some break from webmastering too, you know! This toolbar is necessary if you want submit your site to StumbleUpon and gain more traffic. Oh, and this thing is crucial for those stumble exchanges too!

4. InFormEnter - Are you THAT lazy to submit your site to thousands of directories? This extension is for you because you can just enter the information that you need to give the directories ONCE. Then you can just click your way through the day and receive a lot of juicy backlinks. :)

5. SearchStatus - This is another extension that is dedicated to webmasters; it displays the PageRank, Alexa Rank and Compete Rank of every page that you visit on the status bar! This can also check for the WHOIS of a domain, the number of nofollow links and other relevant information for webmasters. In my opinion, this is really a must!

There are tons of useful extensions, but I can’t list them all here. You should search the net for other cool extensions.

Safari

This web browser is used mainly by people who have Mac as their OS, but this browser can also be used on Windows computers. I can say that this browser is pretty useful for browsing, but it is not as diverse as Firefox. It supports CSS and it has a modern look so people can browse sites with ease.

According to its official website, it has a “blazing fast” performance and it can execute JavaScript up to 2.8 times faster than IE and 1.6 times faster than Firefox. I can’t attest to this as I haven’t really used Safari for a long time, but I can say that this browser kicks Internet Explorer’s butt.

Internet Explorer

This is the default web browser of all Microsoft Windows computers. According to my research, “Internet Explorer just sucks!” and “Internet Explorer is the king of all browser bugs…”. Well, in my experience, those statements are quite true. Unbelievably, there is still a huge number of people who use this crappy browser, and even if other people convince them to switch to another browser, they just won’t do… they just won’t!

Because of the fact that some people do not realize the inconvenience and insecurity of IE, webmasters just have to bear with them. We should make sure that all our pages look good in Internet Explorer so that our dear IE users will have a great experience during their stay on our sites (while using the crappy IE).

At least IE still has a use… and that is to check our websites if they look good on this browser. :P

Other Browsers

Other browsers are also useful if you prefer them. Opera, Netscape and the others can be good if you use them for general surfing, but I really recommend Firefox (or Safari) for more advanced stuff.

Conclusion

Web browsers can make your browsing experience become better or worse, your decision will determine if your surfing experience will be good or bad. I highly recommend Mozilla Firefox, but then again, the decision is freely yours. :)
