Which is The Right Term?
Posted by Mike | Filed under Google, SEOWell, is it still Search Engine Optimization or did it change to Google Optimization?
I never really heard of webmasters optimizing their sites for Yahoo!, and most definitely not for MSN. I guess people are optimizing for Google because it’s the most widely used search engine (correct me if I’m wrong, please).
I don’t even think it’s worth optimizing my blog for other SEs besides THE search engine (C’mon, ya know what I mean…), since most webmasters use Google, and obviously my targeted visitors are YOU, webmasters and bloggers. I don’t know if music lovers, teachers, businessmen and other people use Yahoo! or MSN for searching though. One thing’s for sure, Math enthusiasts don’t use Y! or MSN! (Or maybe it’s just me.)
This post isn’t long ’cause I just wanted to get inputs from you. Do you think it’s worth optimizing for other search engines? Or should one focus solely on Google? One last question, do you actually optimize for Yahoo!/MSN/other SEs?
Would love to know your thoughts on this.

LoL! Google Optimization.. GO instead of SEO. I think it’s GO now not SEO.
Yuhu: Haha, nice to see you around here frequently. Hope you’ll stay as an avid reader! Thanks man. Oh BTW I’m gonna post something about MoneyMagnet tomorrow. Watch out for it!
Yes, most webmasters and bloggers optimizing their sites in Google. Google is the first priority then Yahoo.. Base from experience, before I rank in Yahoo, I rank first in Google. So maybe you know what I mean.
Don’t underestimate Yahoo, it sends a lot of traffic to my blogs at least. But I never needed to optimize for it specially. I think Google was so hard to optimize for, other search engines are automatically taken care of.
Bad idea to stay optimized for Google only. Google may be “The” search engine now, but that doesn’t mean that it is “The Only” search engine around. There is still a significant (albeit insignificant, compared relatively to Google) percentage of people using Yahoo! and other search engines. By “significant”, I refer to the absolute number of people.
Furthermore, Google is *also* probably scraping the PR algorithm to use TR, which I’m sure you’ve heard. Yahoo! patented the concept but Google trademarked the term. Things will probably change around here too. There’s much more to SEO than just making Google like your site.
Life is Colourful: Oh, that’s great to hear then.
I don’t really get traffic from Yahoo!, except when people use Site Explorer and check my a certain site’s backlinks, then come across TW3O.
BTW I’m sending you the domain that you won right now.
Lance: Yeah, it’s not the only SE around. Good points you got there, by the way.
Well as im learning the ‘internet game’ and experimenting around i’ve tried to optimize my sites for all search engines may it be Google MSN and Yahoo.
Though if the infamous merger with yahoo and msn goes through; it will be interesting how search engine dynamics change.
so cater to all and gain from all!
I agree with Don. Optimizing for other search engines. Even just few people use those engines, but gaining them all would give significant numbers.
I’d search engine optimisation for all search engines. Optimising your site just for Google puts your site at risk if Google suddenly changes its alogarithm. It’d be better to optimise for all just in case the traffic ratio from the search engines change significantly.
